Feather vs Polyester Cushions: Which Should You Choose?
Feather cushions are softer and heavier, and they hold their shape when plumped or chopped. Polyester cushions are lighter, usually cheaper and easier to wash, but they tend to look less full over time. Choose feather for a luxury, relaxed look, and polyester if you have a feather allergy or need something easy to care for.
Feather and polyester compared
| Feather | Polyester | |
|---|---|---|
| Feel | Soft, weighty and mouldable | Light and springy |
| Look | Full and relaxed, and can be chopped | Neat and rounded, and springs back |
| Upkeep | Needs regular plumping | Needs little attention |
| Allergies | Not suitable for a feather allergy | A good alternative |
| Cost | Usually higher | Usually lower |
Are feather cushions better?
For appearance and comfort, many people think so. Feathers mould to your back and return to shape when you plump them, and their weight stops a cushion sliding around. They do need shaking now and then to stay full. Polyester is the more practical choice if you would rather not plump them.
Why do feather cushions look more expensive?
A feather inner fills the corners of a cover and takes the shape you give it. That is what creates the soft dent of a chopped cushion, which you will often see in hotels and interior photographs.
How do you care for feather cushions?
- Plump the cushion regularly, shaking it from side to side, so that the feathers stay evenly spread.
- Take the cover off for cleaning, and follow the care instructions on the label or product page.
- Air the inner occasionally, as it can absorb moisture.
Which feather cushions do we make?
We offer a duck feather inner with our square cushions and designer cushion covers, in the matching size for each cover. If you already have an inner you like, you can buy the cover on its own. See our cushion size guide for help with sizes.
